Abstract
Localized agri-food systems (LAFS) represent an interesting approach concerning the need to address the complex problems characterizing the overall framework of local and territorial development in rural areas. In this regard, technological innovation, and the generation of endogenous capabilities by local companies in the sector and academia represent an option in terms of innovation, productivity, and competitiveness. The purpose of this study was to provide explanatory elements defining relationships between LAFSs, the local firm, and endogenously generated capabilities and technologies. For that purpose, a case study was conducted at Biofábrica Siglo XXI, a producer of agricultural inputs (biofertilizers and compost). These inputs are necessary factors in the optimization of agricultural production carried out within the LAFS. The main conclusions describe a positive relationship between the participation of local agribusiness firms, the endogenous technology and capacities, and increased productivity in the LAFS where such innovations are used.
