From Origins to Consequences: Actors, Institutions and Societal Consequences of Neoliberalism

This study aims to characterize neoliberalism by examining its key actors and institutions, and to evaluate its impact on contemporary societies. The theoretical framework regarding the characteristics and consequences produced by this movement in the social fabric is examined. The formation of a new subjectivity —the 'neo-subject'— is essential for establishing a model of interpersonal relationships characterized by the objectification of others, alongside the establishment of the market as a state responsibility. It is concluded that neoliberalism represents a new global rationality that transcends its status as the heir to classical liberalism. The aim is for both individuals and states to internalize business rationality: individuals are oriented towards constant self-assessment, while states focus on serving consumers rather than citizens.

Labor Informality and Underemployment in Mexico: A Biprobit Analysis

This study analyses the impact of socio-economic variables on the likelihood of being an underemployed or informal worker in Mexico in 2007, 2009, 2019 and 2020. Microdata from the National Occupation and Employment Survey (ENOE) of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) were used. The results of the Biprobit model suggest that having a high school or college education, as well as an income greater than two minimum wages, decreases the likelihood of being both an informal and underemployed worker. Working in a microenterprise with a physical location, or in a small, medium or large enterprise, reduces the probability of being both informal and underemployed compared to working in a microenterprise without a physical location.

The economic value of carbon storage and sequestration in Mexico

This article aims to estimate the monetary value of the carbon storage and sequestration ecosystem services provided by Mexico’s biomass and soils. To achieve this, the study proposes a method of accounting that incorporates both carbon storage and sequestration simultaneously. Economic valuation is performed using data from georeferenced information systems on ecosystems and various scenarios regarding the social cost of carbon. The results show that the economic value of carbon storage and sequestration ranges from 0.14% to 22.88% of Mexico’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2018, even when considering extreme scenarios. This value depends on the social cost of carbon and the discount rate used. The results suggest that carbon storage and sequestration services are fundamental to the design of decarbonisation policies.

Gender, age and distance in bicycle use on ecobici program at Mexico City

The main objective of this study is to analyze the long-term relationship between Ecobici users' age in Mexico City and the distance they travel on their trips. Cointegration tests are conducted, and an error-correction vector is estimated. The results indicate that the variables are in a long-run equilibrium relationship and that there is a one-way causality running from age to distance traveled.
